As seasoned pet owners, at Petlox, we often go back and forth on whether we’re giving our pets the best food. Especially when it comes to picking between wet canned food, and dry kibble food. For the sake of this particular comparison, we are going to leave out the option of fresh, raw pet food though we know this category is also on the rise. Let’s get into it!
Wet, Canned Food
There are many pros when it comes to wet food. For example, they typically contain more protein and fewer carbohydrates compared to traditional kibble. Little to no artificial flavorings and colorings are packed into these canned, wet foods. And surprisingly enough, since they are in air-tight packaging, there are no synthetic preservatives added because the oils and fats don’t easily spoil. Wet food might also be the best option for you if your furry companion is overweight and needs to pack in more nutrients in less volume. You should also consider wet food if your fur-baby tends to have dental problems because, as you may have heard from their chewing, kibble is hard on their teeth.
You might be thinking that it’s already decided—that wet food is the way to go. With all the pros we’ve discussed, it seems like the obvious choice. But, let’s hear about pros of dry food too.
Dry, Kibble Food
Kibble is often the more affordable and convenient option. If you’re on a budget, you can easily get a couple weeks of worth of dry food at a modest price tag. Dry food is also convenient because you can fill up your pet’s bowl for the whole day and not have to worry about anything going bad or becoming contaminated (which is always a convenient option for those working full-time with no pet-sitter around). Wet food, on the other hand, quickly grows bacteria when exposed for too long. Kibble may not be as fresh or as nutrient-dense as wet food is—but it is still jam-packed with as much goodness as possible for your four-legged friend’s optimal absorption.
This might be a lot to consider, we understand. So to make it easier for you, we suggest a better alternative: alternating your pet’s food now and then. How often you may ask? Not too often, but approximately every three months or so should be good. This will not only give you both the benefits of both options, but also will be a nice surprise for your cat or dog when they go to their bowls. Another good alternative is to combine the two types of food! However, be sure to refrigerate any remainder of wet food after opening.
Here, at Petlox, we wish you and your pets the best of luck on your journey of finding the perfect meals!
