Just like human intelligence, there are levels to how smart dogs are based on their breed. Although each dog is unique and there are some that may stand out in the crowd, there are certain inherent qualities that are fixed in them as a whole. We have looked to the American Kennel Club for their picks and here they are (in no particular order)!
Border Collie
The first brainiac is the Border Collie, the world’s premier sheep herder who is a workaholic at that. It is known for its ability to push it to the limit, its superior intelligence and extreme instinct.
Poodle
Our second Einstein is the Poodle, with wicked smarts and athleticism. It has been historically bred to retrieve things from the water and the miniatures of their breed have been excellent truffle hunters.
German Shepherd
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the German Shepherd is on this list as they are the world’s number one police, guard and military dog along with being a master herder. Due to their elite skill set, they are often misjudged for being aggressive and scary when in actuality, they are the most loving family companion.
Golden Retriever
It might come as a surprise that pop-culture’s perfect family pet, the Golden Retriever, was bred as a hunting companion. They are smart, obedient and eager to please. Due to their ability to help in the hunt, they are ideal helpers in search-and-rescue missions and make amazing additions to any family.
Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman Pinscher is on this list for its speedy rapidfire and incredible stamina. Like their friend the German Shepherd, they are bred to be a police dog and also a war dog. Their training is of the utmost intensity and they are also taught to be vigilant guardians.
Shetland Sheepdog
The Shetland Sheepdog "Sheltie" is the mini version of the working Collie. They are long haired and rough-coated with keen intelligence. As excellent herders, they are very hard workers and thrive off a good hard day’s work.
Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever was originally developed from Canadian fishing dogs and has a solid build. It is an ideal family dog as they are gentle, friendly and intelligent. They make great sporting dogs and love to be kept active.
Papillon
Our final contender, the Papillon stands out on our list for being a smaller package, but just as much dog as the rest of these guys! With upbeat athleticism and curiosity for exploration, this little breed has some sterling qualities. Originally called the Dwarf Spaniel or Continental Toy Spaniel, the Papillon was making a name for itself as early as the 16th century being depicted in art work. A favorite of the French monarchs Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette for being happy, friendly and everything you could want in a pup. It is easily defined by its wing-shaped ears that give the breed its name “papillon”, French for “butterfly”!
