Break out the champagne L.A. has officially become a “no-kill” shelter city in regards to rescue animals; making it the largest city in the country to do so! This is huge because of the size of the city but also given the fact that Los Angeles is arguably the most influential city in the United States; it now exists as an example of what is truly possible.
L.A.’s save rate of the number of animals who are rescued to be rehoused, adopted, or fostered is up to 90.4% which officially falls into the “no-kill” shelter status bracket.
This project has been in the works for almost a decade and was launched nine years ago by Best Friends Animal Society. This initiaive has involved a lot of moving parts, hard work, and innovative ways of operating during COVID. Throughout the last year, everything shifted in a positive direction with heavy community involvement and foster placement going through the roof as alternative for people who needed to surrender their pets. Since COVID has been so devastating for so many, it just shows how incredible animals are and how that unconditional love truly transcends species.
The United States currently has a 79% save rate overall so with Los Angeles’ recent change it is sure to create a ripple effect. So far we have Deleware as the only no-kill state and the organization is hoping to see Utah follow suit.
