So you’ve decided to take the plunge and become a cat parent; you’ve come to the right place. Unlike the almost textbook style of personality that dogs have, cats vary in their dispositions and could be a cuddly lap cat or a distant roommate. Let’s dive in and see where you’re at in the process.
Personality is Priority
With the multidimensional nature of the feline as a species, it is a wonder that they all come from the same thing. In order to decide who will be the best fit for you, begin with self-inquiry. The more honest you can be about your needs and wants, the easier it will be to narrow down who is the right kitty for your life; not unlike choosing the right partner to share yourself with. Some cats are super energetic and have “puppy” vibes; while others are a bit more withdrawn. From being very vocal with meows to being quiet and reserved, no two are the same. Do you want a cat that’s cuddly, or do you mind them being a little stad-offish? Being intentional about who you bring home with you will not only create a harmonious space for everyone, but it will also lead to the best quality of life possible.
Kitten or Adult Cat?
We all know how cute kittens can be but with their adorable-ness, comes a lot of work. Just like puppies, kittens need tons of supervision, patience, energy and care. Kittens are playful, and will get their paws on anything they possibly can and being natural hunters makes them prone to climbing things. If you’re opting for a kitten, expect a messy period with a lot of shifts in their personality. When you adopt an adult cat, you’re usually seeing exactly what you will get so however they are coming to, is generally how they will stay
Roommates Rule
If there are young children in the home, it is key to be extra careful and attentive because kids don’t always have the understanding of how to properly pet a cat, and might grab their ears and tails in an act of being playful. Dogs may be forgiving of certain things like hugs that cats might not necessarily feel the same about. Just as well, it’s important to assess the needs of your home if you have other animals living with you as well; make sure everyone will jive together.
How much fur is too much?
Cats like any other hairy animal (including humans) shed; especially short haired ones. Long-haired cats may not shed at the same rate, but their coats are prone to matted coats and hairballs; so you’ll need to make sure they are brushed at least a couple minutes a day. The issue may occur if your cat doesn’t particularly love to be brushed so you’ll need to train them to endure it or it may lead to matted coats that will need to be shaved by a professional groomer.
Listening to Lifestyle
If you work long hours and are gone for periods of time, then an independent cat is perfect for you. However, all cats require daily care with fresh food, water, companionship and play ; regardless of if they like to be pet or not.
Home Modifications
Cats have a love affair with plants and flowers that is sometimes unrequited because they may be toxic to them. Another common thing to watch out for are essential oils; they are typically no-nos for cats. As you prepare for your new friend to move in, make sure to remove anything that could be harmful for them. Unlike dogs, cats can club very high and jump to almost anywhere, so it’s not about storing things higher but making sure it’s impossible for them to come into contact with.
Call in the Big Guns
Work with an adoption coordinator that is free at most animal shelters. These individuals are trained to help you match with the best cat and they are a well of knowledge that is worth tapping into. It is a special process that is sure to keep everyone connected for a long time.
