We all know how excited dogs get when they are about to go on a walk and it’s not for nothing, either! Have you ever wondered why? In this blog post, we’ll jump into all the reasons why walks should be a crucial part of your dog’s daily routine.
1. Dogs thrive with structure. Contrary to popular belief, dogs have amazing biological clocks that are highly in-tune with the cycles and rhythms of life. When they stay within a daily routine they are kept busy, things are always moving and they are not as bored. Like humans, they like to chill but only in contrast to channeling their energy.
2.Just like us, dogs need physical exercise and walking is one of the simplest ways to make sure that happens. Not only is it great for keeping weight off and reducing the risk of health related conditions, it’s an amazing way to work their musculoskeletal system. Their joints and muscles need to be actively used to stay in top shape. The regular cardio will also be a great mood booster! Not to mention, you will also really benefit!
3. Regular walks are amazing for boosting your dog’s confidence. The stability of the daily walk is reassuring because then your dog knows it can rely on something. If your dog is especially shy or fearful, it will give them something to hold on to and feel good about. Predictably is key here, because dogs are biologically prone to recognize patterns, and if they are matched with that energy they will feel super confident.
4. Walking is also great for their brain; A fantastic mental exercise because it adds in the element of exploration. This is the one time of the day (usually) that they can go out and see the neighborhood, so make sure to get some bang for your buck. They love to use their keen sense of smell so make sure to factor in some sniffing time as well. Also, although they do love routine, it’s important to break apart from the usual routes once in a while to keep things interesting. You could walk on a different street, another neighborhood, a new park or trail.
5. Walks help with socialization! Over this last year, a lot of dogs have developed anxiety due to social distancing and this is the perfect time to start getting them acclimated to the world. Exposing them to different dogs, people and situations will help them be more comfortable with anything out of the ordinary for them.
6. Walking your dog is the perfect way to bond. They will love you for being the one to take them out and they will be so happy that it will give you so many brownie points. Also, it awakens their primal need to be explorers and by getting them outside you are creating a safe space for them to come out of their shell.
Now that summertime is here, there is no better time to go for daily walks. Remember to always be mindful of high temperatures, and choose walking times accordingly. If you must go out in high heat, put some fun booties on their feet to protect their precious paws and take a water bowl with you. As always, it’s been a lot of fun! Take care and happy walking!
